2020-2021 Welcome Letter

Dear Parents and Students of Blochman Union School District:

 

Welcome to Benjamin Foxen’s 2020-2021 school year!

I hope everyone is enjoying and surviving summer. We are excited to begin the 2020-21 school year at Blochman.  Our staff has been working hard to ensure another successful year.  Due to the current order from the state we will begin our year with distance learning for all students. We gained some valuable experience during last year’s distance learning and feel confident we can deliver a high quality, rigorous education during these unprecedented times. Our ultimate goal is to return to in-person learning as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.

All classes will be using Zoom and Google Classroom as our learning platforms. Enclosed in this packet you will find a schedule for all classes. You will notice that Zoom classes have expanded for all grades. This is a difficult balance as we need to meet state instructional minutes, but also take into account student screen time. One big difference from last year is that we are embedding student work time in each class. Our hope is to complete the majority of work during class time and ease the burden for parents. So even though class time will be extended it will be a combination of active and passive screen time. Classes will be 5 days a week with K-5 classes ending before lunch and upper grade classes having one period after lunch.

We are very fortunate to retain the majority of our staff. We do say goodbye to Alia Gamblin (special education teacher), Jarice Butterfield (special education director) and Bryan McNutt (maintenance). They are moving on to new chapters of their lives and will be greatly missed. I am very excited to welcome Sam Orozco who will be serving Blochman as our full-time school psychologist and special education director. Returning teachers are: Nancy Myers – Kinder, Stacey Rapp - 1st grade,  Joni Arnold – 2nd grade, Jennifer McCallister - 3rd grade, Adrienne Perkins – 4th grade, William Wells -5th grade, Jennifer Arkinson, Holly DeKorte and Nathan Saeli will be working in our 6th-8th grade program. Janet Kraus will serve as our special education teacher. We are extremely fortunate to have such outstanding educators working with our children.

Teachers will be scheduling individual appointments for Thursday August 13th and Friday August 14th to meet on campus and go over classroom expectations and answer any questions. Parents will also be able to use this time to pick up curriculum, student materials, and computers if needed for the upcoming school year.  The first day of instruction will be Monday, August 17th.

More than ever I encourage parents to stay involved and be an active participant in your child’s education. Through team work, open communication, and dedication to high level learning we will continue to provide a family atmosphere where kids come first.

Hi Blochman Family,

If you haven’t already, please remember to call the office and set up your conferences for next week. The conference is very important to keep all of us on the same page to assure your kids/our students are doing well. Our attendance has been outstanding……thank you for the role you play. I wanted to let you know we are still in the process of working out a waiver with the county. The hope is to bring kindergarten back first and eventually expending through 5th grade. Unfortunately there is not a waiver available to junior high students at this time. I would like to see kinder back within the next couple of weeks, but can’t make any promises. I will be sure to update all of you as I know more. Thank you for all the compliments Blochman has been receiving regarding our staff. I am so proud of how hard everyone is working to benefit our students. Have a fantastic weekend Bobcats!  (9-18-20)

 Happy Friday Everyone,

We are excited to get this school year started. Our teachers returned to campus today and we are working hard to make this a meaningful year. If you have not yet signed up for your back to school meeting please do so. The office is open from 8am to 4pm Monday through Friday. Remember to bring your completed first day packet forms to your meeting. Please do not be late for your appointment. If you are, we will need to reschedule your meeting for a different time. Parents as well as students are encouraged to attend. Children must stay with their parents at all times. Our playground will not be open. Also, please remember to wear your mask and social distance when on campus. I am looking forward to seeing a-ll of you and having a great school year. (8-10-20)

Good Afternoon Blochman Parents,

We are prepared for a great year! Our commitment is to ensure the success of all students. Everyone will be receiving first day packets by mail this week. On August 13th (Thursday) and August 14th (Friday) we will be conducting individual back to school meetings on campus with every parent and student. Each meeting will last a half an hour and cover expectations and answer questions for the upcoming school year. Meetings will run on the half hour beginning at 8:30am with the final appointments at 2:30pm. Please make the necessary arrangements to be available to meet. I encourage you to call in and make an appointment that best fits your schedule. It is very important to call right away if you have multiple students to ensure you can schedule consecutive appointments. During this meeting you will also be picking up computers (if needed), curriculum, and other school supplies. Please be ready to turn in the forms that were mailed to you when you arrive for your appointment. Zoom classes will begin on Monday August 17th. Our class schedule is setup to assist our students with the majority of their work. They will spend time working on assignments built into their Zoom classes. My main request from parents is to get their children to class on time and setup a designated desk or table to do their work. As a team….our mindset needs to be school as usual. Classroom behavior and completed assignments will be a priority. We learned many lessons from last spring and feel confident we have enhanced our program to enable all students to be successful and take as much of the load off the parents as possible. Our dedicated staff will report to campus daily to perform their work schedule. Please feel free to reach out anytime you have questions or need assistance. Office hours are 7:30am to 4pm, Monday thru Friday. Please schedule your appointment as soon as possible. Together we will make this a great year for our Bobcats! (8-3-20).

Good Evening Blochman Parents,

 

Just wanted to give you an update on our 2020/21 school year. Today the governor announced that all school districts residing in a county on the watch list must begin the year with distance learning. With Santa Barbara County making the watch list this means beginning August 13th we will be providing online learning for our students. I know a lot of us were hoping for in person learning and that is still our goal, but we are excited to finally have some clear direction and start planning for a great school year. We will be enhancing our curriculum from last year and strive to have all of our students receive a meaningful educational experience. We will continue with our safety measures for in school instruction and be ready to pivot when it is safe for our students and staff to return to school. More than ever I am asking for the support of our parents to engage with us and ensure a successful school year for your children. I will start putting schedules together and share details as they become available. We will plan a time to get computers, curriculum, and others materials available for pick up before school starts.
